The museum of Science and Curiosity of Sacramento (MOSAC), features a brand new innovative exhibit space that addresses topics like water and climate change. For this gallery, I designed and lead the UX and UI on several pieces including the sustainable Sacramento interactive wall as well as the exhibit design graphics in the gallery.
Using physical and interactive controls, visitors interact with an illustration of the city of Sacramento making small changes to transition the city to a zero-carbon economy. This interactive combines wall-printed graphics with projected mapped animations.
For the interactive projected wall, I developed individual wireframes showing the user flows for each of the activities. In this case, in the Modernized Mobility activity, visitors find changes they can make to create a city more suited to alternative transportation, then deliver them to the Capitol to transform the mural
This floorplan elevation sketch is part of the concept phase of the project and shows the original concept for the interactive wall before getting into production.
The prototyping stage of the project was paramount for the development of the Sacramento wall. A completed half-size scale wall prototype was constructed in our studio allowing us to troubleshoot and user-test with ease.
Using a world map, visitors select highlighted cities around the world to see how ordinary people are helping their communities to move to zero-carbon or to prepare for climate change.
Visitors can explore the full set of stories on the touchscreen. A popup console within the screen allows visitors to browse stories and send their selected videos to the main monitors.
After selecting a story visitors watch inmersive videos documenting stories of climate action.
The original form factor for this interactive included a physical round table with projection and 6 knobs for multiplayer input. This was the first iteration of the user flow I designed which proved a few challenges such as the possibility of a vote tie or how to handle a visitor leaving in the middle of the votation process. Ultimately we decided to simplify this interface and convert it into a single digital screen, allowing visitors to focus on the screen array and climate change story.
In this interactive, visitors learn about global climate action organizations. Visitors can read more information and email their favorite selections home.
Visitors begin by choosing a climate-related topic to act on: climate justice, transportation & energy, or the environment.
Learn About the Organization
Touching any featured organization opens up a popup with an image, more information, and a button to add the organization to a list visitors can email to themselves.
Add Organization to Your List
Selected organizations are added to a list (like an online shopping cart). At any time, visitors can touch a button on the list to finish and send it home.
Email Information
Visitors enter an email address to receive information and links on their chosen climate action organizations.
This is an example of the first set of wireframes I developed for this interactive. The original approach included creating a top tracking selection area to keep visitors aware of their previous choices (as the final outcome was a customized email), after testing we decided to simplify the approach in the final design.
